Migros to charge for plastic bags
All plastic bags in Migros stores in Switzerland are no longer free, an initiative that will soon be followed by Coop.
So far, the company says customers have reacted positively to having to pay 5 cents for a new plastic bag to carry their shopping if it helps protect the environment.
Coop tested paying for plastic bags last week in ten branches in Zurich, resulting in an 80 per cent declined in use. By next spring all bags will have to be paid for.
They won't disappear entirely from supermarkets however as bags will always be available near the fruit and vegetables.
