Low-cost bus services from abroad would be a ‘welcome shock’ to Swiss transport providors

Low-cost bus services from abroad would be a ‘welcome shock’ to Swiss transport providors

A price watchdog for Switzerland has said low-cost bus services from abroad would be a ‘welcome shock' to Swiss transport.

Stefan Meierhans told Swiss public radio, RTS, that more competition is needed in Switzerland to make travel more accessible.

Meierhans believes that, services like the German company Flixbus could be a good challenge to Swiss Federal Railway and other rail companies.

The federal cost oversight office recently found that rail transport has been steadily becoming more expensive than driving in Switzerland, with costs rising 45% since the 1990s.

For Meierhans, offering low-cost bus services in Switzerland is important for providing better access to transportation, as well as a wider range of more affordable options for passengers.
