Campaign for black boxes to be installed in all vehicles
Black boxes that record details of any accidents on the road should be installed in all vehicles in Switzerland, according to the country's Accident Prevention Bureau. The bureau says that drivers, especially young people, tend to be more careful if they know their moves are being recorded, however there are no official studies to back this up.
Black box recorders for cars have been around since the 90s. During an accident they store information such as speed, acceleration, braking power and direction. They are already available in Switzerland through car insurance companies Axa Winterthur and Allianz.
Axa says that nearly 35,000 crash recorders are already installed in cars that are insured by the company. Having a black box is voluntary but young motorists who are willing to give it a try are given a 15% reduction in their premiums.
