New green trade deal with Canada
The Swiss Energy Minister, Doris Leuthard, who's on an official visit to Canada, has said that she wants to strengthen the links between the two countries to build a ‘sustainable green economy' together. She has called for the renegotiation of a free-trade agreement between Switzerland and Canada, with a focus on protecting the environment.
Speaking at the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations yesterday, Ms. Leuthard said that falling oil prices over the past two years have had an impact on the renewable energy sector, and that cheap fossil fuel has led to delays in research and innovation into renewable energy, and a lack of investment in green transport.
The minister is in Canada until Thursday. Her visit is concentrated on energy and climate policy, and transport-related issues.
