Man dies after stolen kayak capsizes on Lake Neuchâtel

One man has died and another is injured after stealing a kayak which capsized on Lake Neuchâtel on Saturday night.

The victims were part of a group of three, aged about 25 years old, from the French department of Haut-Rhin (Alsace), who had been camping in Yvonand (VD).

Vaud police say the men were about 700 meters from the shore when they overturned.

Rescuers were alerted at around 4:30 on Sunday morning and launched a major rescue operation.

One man managed to swim to shore, a second was rescued and taken to hospital in Yverdon-les-Bains with hypothermia.

The body of the third was found late next morning. Vaud Cantonal Police are investigating  how the accident happened.
