Coop and Migros to start charging for disposable plastic bags
Supermarket giants, Coop and Migros are to start charging for their disposable plastic bags.
Coop will begin charging 5 cents a bag from 24 October in ten stores in Zurich before rolling it out across its 850 stores across the country next spring.
The store wants to achieve an 80% reduction in the number of the bags they distribute in their supermarkets.
Migros will apply the same rule and price from 1 November, after successfully rolling out the measure across the canton of Vaud since 2013.
The two retailers will continue to provide free bags to pack textiles, toys and fruits and vegetables.
Any profits from the sale of the bags, that are made from 100% recycled material, will go to external environmental projects for Migros and the Development Fund for Coop.
