Man arrested after firefight in Vaud

A man has been arrested after opening fire on police officers in a residential area in Vaud on Friday night.

Officers were called to La Conversion in Lutry at around 10.30pm to deal with a traffic incident.

Before they could talk to the man, who was already known to police, the sixty-year-old from the region, opened fire on them with a 9mm pistol.

Officers took cover behind their patrol car, which was hit several times.

A specialized firearms team was called to the scene and more gunfire was exchanged. Negotiators eventually managed to calm the man down after about 3 hours.

An investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and the man's motivation, fortunately no one was injured.
