Swiss kids not toilet trained at the start of school

Swiss kids not toilet trained at the start of school

Kindergartens in several cantons are complaining many children are not able to go to the toilet by themselves when they start school.

Switzerland is changing the age children are supposed to start school – they should now be in school from 4 years old – and by that time they should be toilet trained.

Teachers say they are being forced to change nappies – which is time consuming and also opens up staff to abuse allegations. Many kindergartens have a policy that 2 members of staff should be present at all times if a child needs to be changed. Some other schools will call the parents to come in and change their child if necessary. Staff hope this will embarrass the parents to make sure their child is ready for school by the age of 4.
