Summer one of the hottest due to last heat wave
This summer has been one of the ten warmest in Switzerland since records began in 1864.
Despite a relatively cool start, August has been 0.7 degrees above average, according to MeteoSwiss, who say the temperature was still less than in 1981 to 2010 by mid-month.
But there was an especially hot end to the month, where records were reached in many places.
In Geneva temperatures hit 33.5 degrees and in Basel they reached 33.8 degrees.
There was also very little rain in August; in western Switzerland, Valais and Ticino not even a third of the normal amount fell.
