Valais should be prepared for big quake
An earthquake, similar to the one that hit Italy last week, could happen in Switzerland by 2040, with the Valais region particularly at risk.
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit Sierre in 1946, killing four people, an area which was sparsely populated at the time.
Speaking to 24 Heures, Valais geologist, Raphael Mayoraz, says in Valais, similarly strong earthquakes happen once every hundred years and he warns that next time the consequences could be much worse.
Since 2004, new buildings in Valais have to be built to be earthquake-proof, and education measures are in place, but, he says, they are only just beginning to take effect.
