WRS launches petition to ensure all UK citizens have an EU vote

WRS // June 8, 2015

ALL UK CITIZENS HAVE A STAKE IN THE EU – ALL SHOULD BE ABLE TO VOTE.

EX-PATS WHO’VE LIVED OUTSIDE THE UK FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS HAVE NO VOICE.

WRS launches petition to ensure all UK citizens have an EU vote

Sign our petition today. Even if you still have the right to vote - but believe everyone should have a voice.

Britain will be voting on whether the country will remain part of the European Union – or go its own way.
The debates have already started and so far, opinion polls (if we choose to believe them), suggest as many as 70% remain undecided.

Whether you’re for the EU or not – if you have a UK passport, you should have a say on the decision if your passport remains an EU one – or not.

WRS is launching a petition to persuade the UK parliament to insert into the new referendum act that all UK citizens will be able to have a say on this extremely important decision.

Millions of UK citizens live outside the country and many of them have been for years – and so have lost their vote.

You may think it’s not relevant to you if you live outside the UK, especially if you live outside the EU.
But there are important aspects to consider.

Being an EU citizen (which UK citizens are) you have the right of abode in all other EU countries. If you live in an EU country and the UK leaves – while it’s unlikely you will be thrown out, you may lose certain rights to benefits and the right to vote in some local elections in the country you now live.

Even for countries outside the EU, some have signed agreements with the EU regarding the treatment of citizens. Switzerland being an obvious example.

If you live outside the EU, but are still working. Consider the impact if you apply for a new job in the EU. Being a non-EU citizen could mean you will lose out to another candidate as the company may choose the easier option of hiring an EU citizen as there will be no need to apply for work permits etc. Ex-pats are by nature highly mobile. You may not think you’ll be leaving the USA anytime soon, for example, but what about the future? Also, what about your kids’ future?

For those who live outside the UK or the EU – this decision will still affect you. It will affect the status of your passport.

That’s why we at WRS believe all UK passport holders deserve a say.

Sign our petition and make sure you get a vote.
