Dig It! Tillandsia (21 October 2019)

Dig It! // Gardening & Green Spaces// General // Oct. 21, 2019

As the weather gets colder, it's time to think about plants for indoors. At the Orticolario show in Italy, I met Paolo Michieli, a Tiallandsia specialist and owner of Michieli Floricultura. You can see ideas for their plants on www.tillandsia.it and for green walls on www.tillandsiawalls.com

Good plants for beginners include Tillandsia brachycaulos multiflora, that flushes pink when in flower and has lots of purple flowers, or Tillandsia "Red Abdita" which is green and red, or lots of different varieties from the Tillandsia ionanthes, which are quite similar. they are all widely available in garden centres or from specialists like Paolo. Bright and sunny rooms, but away from direct sunlight suits them best, and regular soaking two or three times a month with rainwater, if you can get it!
