Time Capsule: Swiss myth and tradition - part 2
Tuesday, 15 September, 2009Natasha Prioetto continues her exploration of the myths and legend that lie deep in the country’s popular history, focusing on the large number of myths involving animals and animal-human hybrids.
Am Alten Silvester, am Samstag 12. Januar 2008, sind in der Naehe von Waldstatt, AR, ein Schuppel schoener Silvesterchlaeuse unterwegs. Der alte Silvester waere eigentlich am 13. Januar, weil der dieses Jahr auf einen Sonntag faellt wurde heute geklaust. Die Klausengruppen, eingeteilt in wueste, schoe-wueste und schoene sind den ganzen Tag unterwegs von Haus zu Haus , in einem Schuppel aus mehreren Klaeusen. Sie stellen sich vor einem Bauernhaus auf und stimmen ein Zaeuerli an, sie schellen gewaltig und das Ganze wird dreimal wiederholt. Dann wuenschen die Klaeuse ein gutes neues Jahr, erhalten etwas zu trinken und oft ein Geldgeschenk. Equipped with cow bells and beautifully crafted mask these so-called Silvesterchlaeuse (New Years Clauses) walk from house to house in Waldstatt, Switzerland, on Saturday, January 12, 2008, to offer their best wishes for the New Year to the farmers in this region.
