Snow Report: Happy faces at high altitudesThursday, 17 March, 2011Skiing conditions vary widely throughout the country. But Matthew Leighton says the good news is that if you can get up to resorts like Zermatt, at higher altitudes, you’ll be smiling on the slopes. But at the other end of the scale you have resorts like Villars where there’s not much snow and it’s wet. The avalanche risk is between level three and four so be sure to stay on the piste:
Snow Report: Ski in the morning and stay on-pisteThursday, 10 March, 2011With temperatures up around 10 degrees, it’s warm out there, and ski conditions feel more like it’s late April. There’s still snow on the pistes, says Matthew Leighton, but morning on-piste skiing is your best bet:
Snow Report: Fresh powder bodes well for skiersThursday, 3 March, 2011After a dry start to the year, fresh new deposits of snow continue to fall in the Swiss mountains, to the extent that even off-piste skiing at high altitudes is starting to look good. Matthew Leighton explains where to find the best ski conditions. He also warns skiers to remain careful, as the new snow can cover up potential danger zones:
Snow Report: Weekend skiing prospects brightenThursday, 24 February, 2011New snow is settling on Swiss mountains finally after a month of less than normal precipitation. As can be expected, ski resorts are singing a much happier tune, and many closed pistes are now reopening. Matthew Leighton has more details, including how much sun is forecast and how cold it will be this weekend:
Snow-starved resorts fire cannonsFriday, 18 February, 2011Amid the driest conditions in Switzerland for 60 years, reporter Matthew Leighton says ski resorts are coping by firing up their snow cannons. Thanks to artificial snow, he says, all pistes are open at Wengen in the Bernese Oberland and at Morgins in the Portes du Soleil region. However, off-piste, rocks are starting to show through in many places. The exception is in the canton of Ticino, where mountain resorts are rocking after receiving a dump of 50 centimeters of snow over the past few days:
Snow Report: On-piste and high up the only option for skiersFriday, 11 February, 2011Since we haven’t had much snow since Christmas, conditions for skiing are not ideal, says Matthew Leighton. Anywhere below 2,000 meters could actually wreck your legs or your skis, he adds. However, if you head to resorts above 2,000 meters and stay on pistes laden with artificial snow, you can enjoy yourself. But get up early and get your skiing done before early afternoon, when the snow starts to turn to slush:
Snow Report: Conditions favour on-piste skiingFriday, 4 February, 2011In the absence of precipitation, snow cannons have worked hard again in recent days. The last few days brought colder weather, but the temperature is set to rise a little this weekend. Off-piste conditions are not looking good but schussing on the groomed slopes holds better promise, with lots of sun forecast this weekend. Matthew Leighton tells you exactly where to go for the best skiing:
Snow Report: Head to the hills for some manufactured snowThursday, 27 January, 2011Yet another week without significant snowfalls, but there is still on-piste fun to be had in the mountains, even if it is with manufactured snow. Plus lots of sunshine. Matthew Leighton has details:
Snow Report: Wrap up against that cold windThursday, 20 January, 2011It’s cold out there—and up there in the mountains. Matthew Leighton warns us to snuggle into our warmest duds for outdoor fun. Part of Switzerland got fresh snow so we could be looking at a wonderful weekend of skiing. But that’s only on-piste, he adds. And if you’re going above 2,000 meters, watch out for objects hidden by drifting snow due to high winds:
It feels like spring skiing...in JanuaryFriday, 14 January, 2011All this balmy weather is playing havoc with plans to ski this weekend. Matthew Leighton says although artificial snow is holding on most on-piste routes, many resorts are only partially open due to the lack of fresh snow. If you can get up to higher altitudes, above 2,500 metres, you will be treated to gorgeous sunshine and snow. But the avalanche risk has also gone up:
Snow Report: Fantastic weather, but...Thursday, 13 January, 2011It’s going to be sunny and gorgeous in the mountains this weekend, but the unseasonably warm weather is not doing skiers any favours. There is some powder to be found about 2,500 metres in places though. Matthew Leighton has details:
Snow Report: Rain, rain go awayThursday, 6 January, 2011If you want to ski, you’ll need to get up to higher altitudes—over 2,500 meters. It’ll be warm pretty much throughout the weekend, says Matthew Leighton. In fact, in western Switzerland, the Monts Jura resorts will be closed. Matthew tells you where you can go for skiing this weekend:
Party on the snowy slopes!Friday, 31 December, 2010Snow, festive activities, warmer temperatures and blue skies—Matthew Leighton says we’ve got it all on the slopes at the moment. And if you’re looking for a party and fireworks up in the mountains there’s lots of snow—especially as you head east. WRS’s Alex Helmick talks to Matthew to get the scoop on the slopes:
Santa's gift for skiers (it's snow)Thursday, 23 December, 2010Santa’s come early, according to Matthew Leighton. That’s because there’s fresh snow for skiing clear across the country. However, above 2,000 metres you do need to be careful of avalanches due to the new snow. And make sure you put your chains on your tires if you’re headed up into the mountains:
Fresh snowfall means superb skiingThursday, 16 December, 2010The weekend promises to provide great skiing, with the fresh snowfall in central Switzerland, the Bernese Oberland, Leysin area and in parts of Valais. Matthew Leighton tells WRS’s Conor Lennon that resorts in the east are also happy with the 60 centimeters they’ve gotten over the past few days:
