Snow Report: Fresh snow coming with another cold spellThursday, 31 January, 2013Despite the rain and above-zero temperatures this week, there is still a good base layer of snow on the pistes. Matthew Leighton says that on top of that, there could be a lot of new snow falling this weekend with the dip in temperatures. However, wrapping up will be imperative as the wind chill could be harsh at higher altitudes, and beware—the risk of avalanche will be high:
Practically perfect conditions for hitting the slopesThursday, 24 January, 2013Matthew Leighton encourages skiers to head for the slopes now as many, many resorts are reporting excellent conditions with temperatures neither being too hot nor too cold, and very little wind. While there may be cloud cover in the valleys this weekend, lots of sun is expected for higher altitudes:
Snow Report: Cold weather makes for good snowThursday, 17 January, 2013Skiers will find ideal conditions in the mountains, with a very good base of snow throughout the country and some fresh snow in certain regions. Though it’s cold, low temperatures are keeping the snow in excellent condition. Mountain goers should dress as warmly as they can as temperatures have dropped to roughly -25 degrees Celsius at 3,000 metres. Matthew Leighton reports:
Snow Report: Winter, sun and snow returnThursday, 10 January, 2013Winter is back and the warm spell is over. Matthew Leighton says that snow coverage is “above average” in most parts of the country. He brings you the latest weather forecast, predicting sunshine throughout the weekend, and mentions some races that mountain goers will be able to watch:
Snow Report: Fun in the sun...and snow!Thursday, 3 January, 2013Matthew Leighton says there’s lots of snow and sun clear across the country and the skiing conditions are brilliant. You can go all day long but remember, the weekend will be busy. The risk of avalanches is fairly low but you’re safest on the pistes:
Snow Report: Good skiing above the cloudsThursday, 20 December, 2012Just as with the last three weekends, rainy weather is putting a bit of a damper on Switzerland’s spirits. However, the good news is that there is a decent base layer of snow covering the mountains for skiers. Matthew Leighton recommends heading above the 2,000 meter mark to get above the clouds and enjoy some excellent conditions:
Snow Report: 'Head to higher altitudes to avoid the rain'Thursday, 13 December, 2012While there is lots of snow coverage throughout the country, rain and rising temperatures may change conditions in the next couple of days. However, higher altitudes may not be affected by the wet weather. Matthew Leighton lets you know which resorts are forecasting good skiing conditions:
Snow Report: Wonderful powder snow, extremely high avalanche riskThursday, 6 December, 2012Matthew Leighton takes a look at the slopes and declares that the ski season has now really started in Switzerland. The precipitation all week has left a substantial amount of powder snow on the mountain tops, however, caution should be taken as avalanche risks are also extremely high in many places across the country:
Snow Report: About 25 resorts open amid high avalanche riskThursday, 29 November, 2012This coming weekend only a few resorts will be open—about 25 out of about 200 across Switzerland. Zermatt is hoping to get about 30 kilometers of pistes open for this weekend. Matthew Leighton tells us the fresh snow we’re seeing now will provide a great base for skiing once the ski season officially opens. Of course, the five or six glacier resorts are open all year round. If you must go up this weekend, Saturday is your best day weather-wise, but beware of avalanches:
Snow Report: Excellent ski conditions at high altitudesThursday, 5 April, 2012For the last Snow Report of this year’s season, Matthew Leighton says while most low-lying resorts are closing this weekend, there is still plenty of snow on the higher slopes. Though it has been a disappointing last few days with rain and warm temperatures, the temperature may dip on Sunday creating some good ski conditions for next week:
Still sunny skiing at over 100 resortsThursday, 29 March, 2012Good skiing is to be had from 10 a.m. until between noon and 2 p.m., especially on higher or north facing slopes, says Matthew Leighton. But beware—earlier than that the snow is very hard. Matthew says many pistes around the country are still open and if you call ahead, you might even be able to get 30 to 40 percent off at some of the resort hotels:
Snow Report: Classic spring ski conditionsThursday, 22 March, 2012Spring has sprung! It’s going to be warm and sunny for the first official weekend of spring, but resorts across the country still have plenty of snow on the pistes despite the daily melt. And resorts will be relatively quiet for the next week before the long Easter break so you can enjoy the excellent conditions without the crowds. Matthew Leighton has details:
Snow Report: Another sunny, ski-friendly weekendThursday, 15 March, 2012Another sunny start to the weekend prompts Matthew Leighton to encourage skiers to take advantage of some morning skiing followed by a seriously long lunch. With plenty of snow left at anything above 1,500 meters, the conditions are set to be excellent despite a drop in temperature on Sunday afternoon:
Snow Report: Sunny weather and an extra layer of snowThursday, 8 March, 2012Adding to the excellent foundation of snow already covering altitudes above 1,500 meters, another layer was deposited last Monday and in the last 24 hours. All resorts are reporting that virtually all pistes are open. Matthew Leighton say to expect sunny weather over the weekend with spring snow conditions in the afternoon:
Snow Report: Lots of snow, sunshine and warm weatherThursday, 1 March, 2012The sun will be shining Friday and Saturday, but you will need to be out skiing early and stop on the south facing slopes by lunchtime due to the spring snow conditions. Matthew Leighton says to expect temps of 10°C even at altitudes of 2,000 meters. There is plenty of snow everywhere across the country above 1,500 meters, however as avalanche risk is increasing, off-piste skiing is not recommended:
