Kids in Mind: Helping children deal with mistakes
Child psychotherapist Rachel Melville-Thomas talks about how parents can help kids deal with their mistakes. Children first realize they’ve made mistakes at about two years old—though they don’t yet realize it. As kids get older and do realize what they’ve done, she says adults should stay calm, acknowledge the mistake—and give an invitation to resolve things. And kids can learn from their mistakes. Above all, she says we should try to avoid sarcasm when reacting to kids’ mishaps and wrong decisions:
