Hello Cooks.. Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the program yesterday, and salivated when listening to the program about Mexican food, esp. the tamales. My sister-in-law in Phoenix is Hispanic and has tamales for me that she buys out of the garage of a woman who makes them at home. Fabulous! I’m originally from San Francisco and bide family time between San Fran and Phoenix….and try to savour Mexican food when I am in Ca. and Az.
I know EXACTLY what Julia spoke about trying to find the ’real’ Mexican food restaurants in San Francisco, esp. in the 60’s. There used to be a place called Rosa’s down in the Castro, not on Castro, but a couple of streets over. Can’t remember the street name. It was a bit grimey, few people spoke English and the food was exceptionally terrific - and very Mexican. No sloppy beans and overcooked rice on a giant plate with 2 beef tacos with velveeta cheese - bleeeeehhh! Small plates and tasty bits of this and that….not a bit of grated cheese. Real food…hot to semi-hot sauces.
I agree, in over 25 years in Switzy/Europe, I have yet to find a restaurant that serves real mexican food…much less good. I save it for my trips back to the states, and don’t even bother with El Paseo muck at Migros.
Thanks for the great programme you two. I didn’t hear all of it, but I sure heard enough to make me drool for a tamale or properly prepared chile rellenos!
Did you mention anything about where you can find ’real’ Mexican food ingredients around Switzy or Europe?
Tamales Forever! Thanks for the happy listening.
