Food Scout: Wines from the ancient grapes of Valais
Food scout Amy Eber met with renowned Swiss wine expert, consultant and author Chandra Kurt to discuss her collaborative effort with Swiss Wine Woman of the Year 2008 Madeline Gay. The women developed a collection of wines using single, ancient, indigenous grape varieties of Valais, some dating as far back (or before) Roman times:

How did Switzerland begin exporting their own wine production? In 1995 I felt lucky just receiving two as a gift in USA; one ZANOLARI military red, and Neuchatel Sauvageon blanc. Bon Aperitif!

Chandra Kurt’s response to Gregory’s question: «Switzerland is a very old wine country and is famous for dinking almost all the wine produced. Of the approximately 1.07 million hectolitres annually produced wine, 95% is consumed in the country. Export was never a big issue. Nevertheless small quantities of Swiss wine were always export to all corners of the world. Today there is a more structured export effort.»
