Violence in Egypt strikes journalists

A Belgian journalist who writes for Swiss newspaper Le Temps is one of many journalists caught up in the latest violence on Egyptian streets.

Maurice Sarfatti, who writes under the name of Serge Dumont, was beaten yesterday while covering a demonstration in favor of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Sarfatti, who also contributes to the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, told his bosses he was taken to a military outpost and accused of spying.

The violence also hit four Israeli journalists and crews from American broadcasters ABC and CNN.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists accused the Egyptian government of trying to suppress independent reporting about the unrest, a charge that the government denies.
