U.S. tourist dies in train collision

Bern cantonal police yesterday said a 23-year-old American tourist died over the weekend in the Bernese Oberland. She and three others tried walking through a railway tunnel between Interlaken and Därligen.

Investigators say a train approached the group and the driver hit the emergency brake, but could not stop in time to avoid the tourist.

Her three companions escaped unharmed but are being counseled during their bereavement.

Bern cantonal police would not give many details in the case.

It’s assumed the group was trying to find its own path between the towns, as there is no official foot path.

Därligen town clerk Peter Blatti said he had never heard of such an accident happening before.
