Tree-eating beetle moves to Zurich

Cantonal officials in Zurich had to move quickly to incinerate dozens of trees infested with the dreaded Asian Longhorned Beetle.

Officials found the pest in Winterthur, after already finding it in Basel, Fribourg and Thurgau.

More than 60 trees were destroyed to try and stop an infestation of the beetle, which may have infiltrated Switzerland through cheap wooden pallets.

Federal environment officials have declared that a full infestation of the beetle would pose an economic and environmental danger to Swiss agriculture, parks, and forests.
