Swiss want new 'Swiss' web address

The Swiss government has applied for a new domain name for Switzerland, with the international administrator of domain names ICANN.

Domains are the endings of web addresses, like “.com,” “.net,” or “.ch.”

The Swiss government applied for the ending “.swiss,” which it says will raise visibility and clarity for Swiss entities.  It said “.ch” is sometimes confused with “.cn,” for China.

ICANN is not expected to announce new domain name options before early next year.
