Swiss, UAE investigate grenades in Syria

Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched a joint commission this week to investigate Swiss grenades found in Syria.

The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) said today the commission was especially tasked with seeing if the grenades were part of a 2003 shipment to the UAE.

SECO pointed out that photos of the grenades published by Swiss media were not absolutely conclusive as being Swiss, but the countries took the evidence very seriously.

With the commission’s start, a suspension of already approved military exports to the UAE has been lifted, affecting mostly training airplanes.

There is still a moratorium for new UAE requests for Swiss military goods.
