Swiss Army eyes Israeli drones

Switzerland looks likely to acquire six new reconnaissance drones from Israel.

Armasuisse, which makes the country’s technical purchases, says the unarmed, unmanned planes will replace the current 12-year-old model, made in Switzerland.

Armasuisse says the purchase could total up to 400 million francs.

It made the choice between nine models from seven different countries.

Israel, along with the United States, is considered a producer of some of the best models.

The army says the new drones would be quieter and cost less in maintenance work.

Switzerland notably used the technology during the Euro 2008 football championships. It also uses drones for border surveillance.
