Sunday saw the early onset of winter in Switzerland—bringing record snowfall in some parts of the country and causing problems on the roads.

Snow in the lowlands and cities is relatively unusual in October.

Mervelier in the canton of Jura saw the most with 28 cm of snow, but a record for October was broken in Bern.

Police in Bern said there had been 60 traffic accidents due to the snow from midday Saturday to Sunday.

No one was seriously injured but the police urged drivers to put winter tyres on their cars.
