The Bern cantonal prosecutor will not pursue a libel case against Swiss news agency SDA, after a complaint from a former Guatemalan police chief.
SDA had reported about Erwin Sperisen, head of Guatemala’s Policia National Civil from July 2004 to March 2007, who fled to Geneva after his resignation.
He was accused by a UN commission of masterminding extra-judicial killings.
SDA reported on the affair based on news agency stories and its own interview with Sperisen.
The prosecutor said SDA journalists reported responsibly, leaving open the question of Sperisen’s guilt and making sure he had a chance to comment.
For that, the prosecutor won’t pursue a libel claim.
