PostFinance shuts down WikiLeaks account

PostFinance has closed down the bank account opened by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, dealing another blow to the financial survival of the site.

In a statement, PostFinance said Assange was not residing in Geneva as he claimed when he opened the account.

On Friday, PayPal cut the account used for donations to the site.

Meanwhile, Swiss supporters of WikiLeaks have been battling to keep the domain wikileaks.ch online. After the site was blocked on Friday, the Swiss Pirate Party migrated the entries to other servers.

Denis Simonet, president of the Swiss Pirate Party, says the site is registering about 3,000 requests per second.

And in a separate development, WikiLeaks has published a diplomatic cable which details overseas sites which the U.S. considers vital to global security: three Swiss pharmaceutical companies—Roche, Berna Biotech and CSL Behring—which the U.S. considers potential terrorist targets.
