Campaigners for a moratorium on weapons exports now have two Nobel Peace Prize laureates on their side.
South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Argentine Adolfo Perez Esquivel have endorsed the initiative.
Tutu wrote that if Switzerland bans arms exports, it will serve as an example to other countries.
Meanwhile, the publicly owned defense firm Ruag says it would have to fire 2,000 people if the Swiss approve a ban.
Voters will decide the issue on November 29.
