The tiny village of Bettwil in the canton of Aargau seems to have gotten its way—the government says it won’t seek to temporarily house asylum seekers in the town.
Bettwil city government said the defense ministry indicated that at the moment Bettwil was no longer a priority, and will not be evaluated further.
Many of the 560-some residents loudly protested the initial asylum center plans, to house as many as 140 refugees in the town.
Thousands of people signed a petition against the proposed temporary asylum center.
In March, the Federal Council indicated the Defense ministry should find housing in the country for 4-thousand additional asylum seekers.
