New Libya hostage deadline passes

A second deadline for the release of two businessmen being help in Libya has passed.

The Foreign Ministry has confirmed there’s been an official government visit to Tripoli.

A delegation of five or six representatives from the Swiss government traveled to Libya on Sunday. Reports suggest they’d hoped to make contact with the two men held there.

According to Swiss television SF1, the delegation has now returned to Switzerland.

The two businessmen have been detained since diplomatic relations became strained between Bern and Tripoli, following the arrest of the Libyan leader’s son, in Geneva in July 2008.

60 days ago, President Hans-Rudolf Merz told the country that he’d secured the release of the businessmen, having traveled to Tripoli to personally apologise for the arrest. A first deadline of September the first was not met, but, at a meeting between Colonel Gadaffi and the Swiss President at the end of September, the deadline was pushed forward to today.
