National Library goes high-tech—for a fee

You’ll soon be able to read some of the oldest literary works at the Swiss National Library from the comfort of your own home.

For a fee starting off at 15 francs, the library will send a CD or PDF file with a digital copy of works dating back to the 17th century.

Librarians say all of the books in the public domain can be digitalised in a similar way and so far they have around 100,000 titles available.

The service, called eBooks on Demand, is part of a wider EU project launched in 2006 to make millions of works available to the public.
