The Swiss wholesaler Migros sells a number of products from Palestinian territories occupied by Israel, such as dates, potatoes, fruit, herbs and Soda-Club machines.
In the future, the store will declare their origins.
At the moment, these products are declared to be from “Israel.”
However, some products are actually imported from Palestinian territories like the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which are being settled by Israel, said a report in the Migros Magazine on Monday.
The settlements violate international law, according to the UN and the Federal Council.
Currently, customers are not able to verify if the Migros products come from illegal settlements.
Now they will be labelled depending on location, like “West Bank, Israeli settlement area” or “East Jerusalem, Israeli settlement area.”
The new labeling will be introduced in mid-2013.
“We want to ensure transparency, so that the customer can decide if he wants to buy the product or not,” said Migros spokesperson Monika Weibel.
The wholesale group will not remove the products, however.

“Gaza, Israeli settlement area.” It,’s perfectly OK for The Swiss wholesaler Migros to label origins of products. Only, since September 2005 there is no Israeli presence in Gaza whatsoever. All 21 civil settlements have been evacuated, all military installations have been dismantled and no soldiers remain in Gaza. This has been implemented as part of Israel’s disengagement plan of 2005. Migros might wish to get the facts right before succumbing to political pressure.
Hello, I’ve simplified the problem. I do not buy any produce from Israel, period. I am not anti-Jewish at all, but I am against Israel blocking the export of Palestinian produce.
Agreed. I have boycotted all Israeli goods for several years now as well as goods from other non-ethical countries which includes my home country (the U.S.) which I even refuse to travel to.
Wow! An Israeli apartheid-apologist (you know who) is implying in her comment that Israel no longer occupies Palestinian territories. What a troll! Did Israel dismantle the settlements in the West Bank? The Israeli settlements in the illegally occupied Palestinian land are growing, not shrinking. The crazy orthodox fundamentalist Jews are producing dozens of offspring, which means more settlements are built to accommodate them. Perhaps You, Michel, need to get your ’facts’ straight. ’Hasbara’ no longer works, you know - we all have internet access to check the facts.
The term ” Israeli settlement area” should not be used. It gives acceptability to the illegal occupation of Palestine. Israeli settlement of occupied Palestinian land is illegal and the cause of global terrorism and tensions. The products should be labelled “produce of illegally occupied Palestine” . However, this does not state if the producers benefitting Russian converts to Judaism who have just removed into Plaestine, or if the benefits profit the indigenous Palestinians farmers and land owners. More over, Israeli soldiers control Palestinian exports from occupied Palestine and may easily alter them with salmonella or bacteria which may cause deat or food poisoning of Migros customers, to being Palestine into disrepute, in an act of revenge by Israeli settlers who are no longer allowed to falsify labels.
Finally, one questions why Migros would want to support and trade with Israel, a racist apartheid military state accused of atrocities and war crimes? Has Migros no business morals or ethics?
Michael Bodenheimem is right: Migros is indeed under intense pressure from the Israeli lobby. Israeli trade with Migros allows jews and Israelis to believe that her atrocites and war crimes are acceptable to the Swiss. They are not. If you see any Migros customer choosing Israeli apartheid products, ask them if they realise that funding the Israelimarmy by purchasing Israeli produce is encouraging Israeli war crimes, mass infanticide and terrorism.
