A mentally handicapped man who climbed into Bern’s new Bear Park has been injured by a bear.
The 25-year-old man climbed over the railing on Saturday afternoon and fell into the enclosure where he was attacked by one of the park’s two bears, Finn.
Police shot the bear in order to free the man. The man was taken to hospital with head and leg injuries.
Zoo director, Bern Schildger, said the bear - which is in critical condition - is being closely observed.
The month-old Bear Park cost CHF 24 million and gives the animals more space and a more natural environment than their previous home in a bear pit in the capital.

Why on earht didn’t the police, zoo staff or a vet use a tranquiliser gun on the bear?
I was there. It took the police at least 15 minutes to arrive and when they did they didn’t seem to know what to do. It was too easy for the man to get into the enclosure and there must be a better way to separate a bear from a person without putting a hollow point bullet in the bears chest. Unfortunately a lot of children saw the whole thing.
