Rumours have been confirmed by a document Le Temps newspaper got possession of.
French inheritance tax law is about to tighten up, and the Swiss won’t be spared.
The new French government had made no secret of it—its 1953 convention governing inheritance with Switzerland had to be renegotiated, and in its favour.
However, France got the gold and Switzerland the shaft, say tax lawyers who’ve seen the final draft.
For one thing Swiss residents who own real estate in France will now also be taxed in France.
For another, France reserves the right to nab those it suspects of moving to Switzerland in such a way as to avoid paying inheritance tax.
In all, hundreds of thousands of people could be affected.
