The Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross says it spent about 1 billion francs last year on programs around the world, but millions of people still need help.
In an annual report, the ICRC gave a glimpse of its operations in 2011, operating in 80 countries but the organization’s president Jakob Kellenberger today pointed to Somalia and the Horn of Africa as major focal points.
Spending in Somalia alone last year was 92 million francs, more than double what it was in 2010.
The ICRC is also trying to react quickly in crisis zones, like Syria.
Kellenberger said the ICRC was making efforts today to enter the Syrian town of Homs to evacuate trapped civilians, and casualties.
Kellenberger said the organization has yet to get an “unambiguous” agreement from both sides to allow in aid workers.
