The head of Valais cantonal police Christian Varone has been indicted for attempted theft of Turkish cultural artifacts, according the Antalya prosecutor’s office.

Varone was released from jail after his arrest Friday and can return to Switzerland despite the charges.

He allegedly had a pebble from a Turkish archaeological site in his bag, found during a search at the airport.

A correspondent with Turkish news agency Dogan said the pebble was in fact something valuable.

The stone was reportedly picked up by Varone’s son during a walk.
