Head of Valais police back after Turkish indictment

The head of Valais cantonal police Christian Varone arrived in Zurich last night, after spending five days in a Turkish jail, and being indicted for attempted theft of cultural goods.

Varone said he didn’t bear a grudge against the Turkish, who accuse him of trying to steal an artifact, or stone from an archaeological site.

’No, not at all, at the moment.  That’s not my current mindset.  I want to explain the facts in general later, but no..not angry,’ he told reporters at the airport.

Varone praised the Swiss diplomats for their ‘very good work’ in winning his release.

He said he was physically okay, but had not slept much in days.

His family had scrambled until the early hours yesterday to arrange Varone’s exit from Turkey, granted from the prosecutor despite an indictment.

Varone’s son reportedly picked up a pebble during a walk near a historic site, found at the airport before the family returned from the vacation.

Varone has planned a press conference for Friday to tell his side of the story.
