European Union MPs overwhelmingly passed a resolution criticizing Switzerland’s invoking an emergency clause in the Free Movement of People Accord.
The non-binding resolution calls the move discriminatory and asks Switzerland to reconsider.
Some MPs want to know what legal right the Swiss had, and what could be done, after the Swiss decided to limit immigration from eight Eastern European countries.
EU environment commissioner Janez Potocnik spoke for the European Commission, saying cancelling the accord with Switzerland would be worse for EU citizens than life with it, and no counter-measures were planned.
The free movement of people will be on the agenda for Swiss talks with Brussels late next month.
