Egypt can be plaintiff in Mubarak regime cases

The Federal Criminal Court has ruled that Egypt can be a plaintiff in cases against members of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak’s entourage.

Nine defendants had opposed Egypt named as a plaintiff, but the court dismissed those appeals.

The ruling cannot be appealed further.

Swiss Federal prosecutors have opened criminal cases against members of Mubarak’s regime for alleged money laundering, and association with a criminal organization.

The Swiss case runs in parallel to Egypt’s investigation and request for Swiss help, in proving more than 400 million francs of frozen assets from the regime were associated with illicit activity.
