Economy Minister Johann Schneider-Ammann met today with Geneva politicians and management of German pharmaceutical giant Merck, and Merck Serono, discussing the planned closure of Merck Serono’s headquarters in Geneva.
A government press release said Schneider-Ammann wanted to ensure there was a social plan for the employees who may be laid off when operations are moved to Germany.
The statement also said Schneider-Ammann refused to rule out the possibility of layoffs, because Switzerland has a “liberal labor market.”
Merck Serono said it would shut its Geneva site, costing the region 1,250 jobs.
More than half of those employees would be offered positions abroad, the company said.
