Cost of buying train ticket onboard doubles

Waiting until you’re on the train to buy your ticket is going to get more expensive this summer. The national rail company says that from August the first, the extra charge for buying a ticket from the conductor will double – going from CHF 5 to CHF 10.

That’s the amount you pay on top of the price of your journey. Rail bosses say fewer and fewer people are bothering to buy their ticket before they board the train. Officials say they hope the measure will reduce the workload of conductors, especially during rush-hours, and discourage people from trying to avoid paying altogether. Passengers will still be able to upgrade from second class to first class by paying the difference.
