Climber fined for trashing alpine crosses

A mountain guide in Fribourg has been fined a three-year conditional sentence of 90 daily rates of 10 francs, for destroying three crosses on Voralp peaks.

A court in Bulle found the man guilty of violating belief and religious freedoms.

The man said he would not destroy crosses again, having achieved his purpose of starting a debate over the issue.

He said the “church can not put its symbols all over the place.”

Prosecutors rejected this reasoning, saying the man was upset after a breakup, and wanted to find an outlet for his anger.
