Chemical spill, no serious injuries

One hundred and fifty members of the emergency services have been cleaning up 3,000 litres of a toxic chemical, which leaked from a building in the canton of Basel this morning.

A smelly, chemical cloud formed over chemical company CABB’s building in Schweizerhalle where the substance was being stored.

Due to weak winds it didn’t spread.

Two hundred employees and people working nearby were checked out and 8 were treated for minor eye irritations.

Police have been monitoring air quality in the area and say there is no risk to anyone’s health or the environment.

Schweizerhalle was the scene of a large chemical and environmental disaster in the 1980’s when a building containing toxic substances burned down.
