The Large Hadron Collider at CERN will close for up to a year starting from 2011 because of design issues.
Researchers want to use the machine to recreate the conditions just after the big bang to find out more about how the universe was made.
It will start up over the next few weeks and run at half power for 18 to 24 months but then it will close for an extended period of time.
