Bear lost GPS after train crash

A bear which collided with a train last week in the canton of Graubünden can no longer be tracked by a radio collar.

Officials yesterday said GPS on the bear dubbed “M13” was damaged in the collision, meaning game officials are left waiting for clues.

Cantonal hunting inspector Georg Brosi said now officials must be patient for the right moment to fix a new transmitter to the bear.

A second bear seen in the canton near Ofenpass last week is being tracked by teams, and should be identified by DNA tests soon.

Brosi said the unknown bear seemed relatively shy.
