Afghan kidnappers demand ransom for Medair staff

Kidnappers have demanded ransom for five aid workers with Swiss organization Medair.

Five workers, including three local staffers and one British and one Kenyan doctor, were kidnapped in Northeastern Afghanistan by at least seven armed men.

A police spokesman said the kidnappers were criminals and not radical Islamists, and their location was identified. Negotiations are underway.

The aid workers were reportedly traveling by horseback on the Tajik border, when the kidnappers struck.

Medair, which is based in Ecublens in the canton of Vaud, had no comment.
