Worries mount over deadly bird flu research
Twenty-two bird flu experts are meeting at the World Health Organization in Geneva later to decide just how far scientists should go in creating lethal mutant viruses in the name of research. The meeting’s been called at short notice because the WHO hopes to settle a row over a call to ban the publication of two scientific studies. They describe how to mutate H5N1 bird flu viruses into a form that could cause a deadly human pandemic—and many are worried. WRS’s Vincent Landon has more:
