Why the Swiss need the EU
The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union last week raised a number of eyebrows. Some questioned whether it was the most appropriate choice for the award—but one man has no doubts as to the contribution of the EU to regional stability. Klaus Armingeon is director of the Institute of Political Science at Bern University. He argues the benefits the EU provides are often underestimated. Not least, he says, by Switzerland—guilty of taking rather more than it gives in return. Armingeon talks to WRS’s Dave Goodman:
