Why do collectors buy art?
At Art Basel, there’s been a palpable sense of excitement as the sales start to roll in from collectors around the world. Wednesday saw an abstract by Gerhard Richter sell for an undisclosed sum of over $25 million to an anonymous American collector, and more record breaking sums are expected over the weekend. But what is it that drives people to collect? Reporter Jennifer Davies went to an off-campus event held by the British Swiss Chamber of Commerce, to track down some expert opinions on the subject:
