Who can replace Kofi Annan for Syrian mission?
“It is impossible for me or anyone to compel the Syrian government, and also the opposition, to take the steps to bring about the political process.” The words of the UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, as he threw in the towel yesterday. The former UN Secretary-General blamed a lack of support and splits among the international community for his decision. It came on the same day Russia said it would not back a UN resolution calling for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. So how does Syria proceed from here?
